Communications Wiring/Cabling Standard
|
The Division of Information Technology is responsible for ensuring that all communications wire/cable is installed and maintained in compliance with the premises (i.e. building) communications wiring/cabling standard. The standard, based on the EIA/TIA-568 Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard, specifies installation, maintenance and repair of all premises copper wire, coaxial cable, optical fiber and associated equipment necessary for the termination of cable/wire.
Departments other than the Division of Information Technology are not authorized to install, maintain or repair premises wire/cable. This policy also prohibits extending cable television, voice and/or data networking infrastructure beyond the individual outlet, port or interface provided by the Division of Information Technology.
Off-campus departments occupying buildings not owned by the University will implement the campus standard on a case-by-case basis consistent with the landlord’s approval.
Exception: Energy management systems operated by Campus Facilities are exempt from this policy.
Existing University Buildings
Departments requesting additions or changes to existing wire/cable facilities must contact the Division of Information Technology at 882-2000 for a consultation.
The Division of Information Technology will coordinate the pathway requirements with Campus Facilities and other departments as appropriate.
New or Renovated University Buildings
In accordance with the standard and as appropriate, construction project managers in Campus Facilities Planning, Design and Construction and MU Health Care will coordinate the design and installation of premises wiring/cabling for all new buildings and renovation projects with the Division of Information Technology. The Division of Information Technology will provide the wire/cable at the prevailing material rate and will terminate, test and certify all such installations at the prevailing labor rate.
