Policy Statement

The Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is responsible for managing the University’s central network services and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations, network standards, and Internet infrastructure requirements.

Procedures

Public Internet Access

The Division of Information Technology is responsible for acquiring and managing the connection between the campus data network and the Internet.

The Division of Information Technology will:

  • Advise the campus community of activities that may violate contractual obligations with the University’s Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as assigning a .com, .biz, or other commercial domain.
  • Implement policies and procedures necessary to ensure contractual obligations are met.
  • Promote responsible use of the Internet by the University community.

Internet Protocol (IP) Addresses

An Internet Protocol (IP) address may not be established without authorization from:

  • The Division of Information Technology, or
  • An authorized departmental IT professional.

Domain Name Service (DNS)

The Division of Information Technology maintains the University’s central Domain Name Service (DNS) server.

Departments must obtain approval from the Division of Information Technology before deploying any additional DNS server on the campus network.

Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS)

The Division of Information Technology maintains the University’s central Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) server.

Departments must obtain approval before deploying any additional WINS server on the campus network.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

The Division of Information Technology provides centralized Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) services.

Departments may not provide DHCP services without prior approval from the Division of Information Technology.
