Preparing & Shipping Packages Containing Hazardous Materials
|
No package containing a hazardous material shall be shipped, offered for shipment or prepared for shipment, from or by anyone representing the University of Missouri, without having first completed the appropriate hazmat employee training as determined and approved by Environmental Health and Safety (EHS, 882-7018), 8 Research Park Development Building.
Hazardous Material
For the purpose of this procedure, “hazardous material” is a substance or material which has been determined by the Secretary of Transportation to be capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce, and which has been so designated [Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Park 171.8].
Regulations
The classification, packing, marking, labeling and documentation of Department of Transportation (DOT) designated hazardous materials are governed by the DOT under Title 49 CFR Parts 171 through 178.
Preparing and Shipping Hazardous Materials with Commercial Carriers
Trained EHS staff members will directly participate in the preparation of hazardous material shipments being offered to commercial carriers, or will otherwise ensure that appropriate training has been completed by individuals offering such shipments on behalf of the University of Missouri.
Moving Hazardous Materials in University-Authorized Vehicles
- Prior to moving any hazardous materials, MU departments responsible for moving hazardous materials in University-authorized vehicles must contact EHS (882-7018) to determine whether a Commercial Driver’s License is required [see also: 6:085 Commercial Driver’s License].
- EHS must also be contacted to provide DOT compliance instructions and documentation.
