MU Environmental Health and Safety Policy

The University of Missouri-Columbia has an obligation to furnish facilities and an environment that will provide reasonable protection from injury and property damage for employees, students and visitors to the University of Missouri-Columbia and to be a good steward of funds coming into its possession and to preserve its assets [UM System Business Policy Manual Section 601].

UNIVERSITY RESPONSIBILITY

All faculty, staff, students and visitors to the University of Missouri-Columbia shall comply with the rules and regulations of the following agencies:

  • CDC - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • DOLIR - Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations
  • DOT - Department of Transportation
  • EPA - Environmental Protection Agency
  • MDHSS - Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services
  • MDNR - Missouri Department of Natural Resources
  • NIH - National Institutes of Health
  • NFPA - National Fire Protection Association
  • NRC - Nuclear Regulatory Commission
  • OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • USDA - United States Department of Agriculture
NOTE: The above list is not all inclusive, but does include the major agencies whose codes and standards will be utilized in conducting University operations. Where conflicts may exist from one code to another, the more appropriate requirement shall apply.

In unusual situations where the University is exempt from regulatory jurisdiction due to its status as a government entity, faculty, staff, students and visitors still have the responsibility and obligation for knowledge of risk and meeting the intent of the regulations.

EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITY

In order for this policy to be effective, it will be necessary for all faculty and staff, particularly those who supervise other employees and who use or are responsible for University assets, to also actively participate in creating a safe and healthful environment.

SOVEREIGN IMMUNITY

Nothing contained in this policy shall be interpreted or otherwise construed to mean that the sovereign immunity of the University is being waived in whole or in part.
